...It’s about more than just who gets what.
I know that when most people hear the words “Estate Plan”, they switch off. It sounds a little boring, complex, and at the best of times, a little bit morbid. And too often, it feels like something only the wealthy or the elderly need to think about.
We believe it can be so much more than that; it's not just about money, but about care and protecting you and your loved ones throughout the journey we call life. It’s one of the most powerful and deeply personal things you can put in place. So if you've ever wondered, "What's the actual point of doing this?" you’re not alone. Let’s unpack it together.
We’re told we “should” have an Estate Plan. But no one explains why.
Maybe someone once told you to get a Will or Estate Plan. Or perhaps you’ve heard or seen on the news the horror stories of families falling apart after someone passed away without an Estate Plan. That’s usually the extent of the conversation, though.
But the real purpose of Estate Planning goes far deeper. When we hear the term 'Estate Planning', a lot of people think of it as a legal process or a few documents that do 'stuff'. Yes, it is important in a legal sense, but it's also about love, legacy, and looking out for each other, even when we're not here. A comprehensive Estate Plan puts in place your wishes so that whatever happens to you or your loved ones on this journey of life, your values are reflected throughout.
So what's actually in an Estate Plan?
A lot of the time, people and companies say that all you need is a Will, but there's a lot more to it as part of an Estate Plan. It typically will include the following:
A Will: spells out who gets what, and who’ll look after certain responsibilities once we're gone.
An Enduring Power of Attorney: An appointment of someone who can step in to make financial or legal decisions if you're unable to.
An Enduring Guardian / Medical Decision Maker: An appointment of someone you trust to make health decisions on your behalf.
Advance Care Directives: for the elderly, outlining how you want to be cared for, if you can’t speak for yourself.
Sounds a bit morbid, right? But at Aditi, we believe this process can and should feel more personal.
That’s why we also aim to provide the following within your Estate Plan:
A Memorandum of Wishes: Providing spaces to be able to write your intentions and wishes, from funeral wishes, gifting and executors.
Memorial Messages: a chance to capture your values, thoughts and guidance for your loved ones. Find more information here.
This isn’t just about legal protection, it’s about emotional connection.
It’s not just about money. It’s about you.
Yes, your Estate Plan helps protect your assets. But what it really protects is your voice and peace of mind. Imagine this:
You have a shoebox of old letters, handwritten recipes, or your kids’ baby photos. To anyone else, they might look like clutter. But to your family? They’re gold. They hold memories, meaning, and identity.
Your Estate Plan ensures those moments aren’t lost. That people know what matters to you and why. That your wishes are respected, your story is preserved, and your care continues, even when you can’t give it in person. It’s about being remembered, not just by what you owned and did, but by who you were.
We've heard that a lot of Estate Planning experiences go like this:
You sit down with a lawyer.
They ask a bunch of questions.
You sign some documents.
They hand you a folder.
You put it in a drawer… and forget about it for the next 20 years.
That’s not how life works, and your Estate Plan should reflect that.
Life changes. Families evolve. Relationships shift. What matters to you today might look different in five years. That’s why your Estate Plan should grow and change with you.
Estate Planning is a journey, not a one-off task. It should be something that’s reviewed, updated, and built on over time. Not because you “have” to, but because your life is worth reflecting accurately. This is why Estate Planning should be collaborative, conversational, and ongoing. We walk alongside you, checking in, adjusting things, making sure your plan always reflects you.
So what’s the point?
Estate Planning isn’t to make life more complicated. It's to give you peace of mind so you can say, “This is who I am, and this is what matters to me.”
It’s not about having money or ticking a box. It’s about care. It’s about your legacy. It’s about love, most practically and powerfully.
